How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Mark the BOL with “Powers, pumping” and NMFC 143730, and note whether the unit is packaged or shipped on a skid for clear handling instructions.
- Cap hydraulic and fuel ports, disconnect or protect electrical leads, and band the unit to a solid skid with edge protectors; crate or shrink-wrap to contain accessories.
- Lower risk by draining residual fuel and oils when feasible, labeling lift points and center of gravity, and providing forklift or sling clearance on the skid.
- From well sites or yards without docks, request liftgate or rigging support and specify any oversize controls or guards that extend beyond the skid footprint.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed NMFC Class 85 eliminates density-based reclass risks, streamlining quotes and invoice audits.
- Non-hazardous status broadens carrier options and helps avoid hazmat surcharges and paperwork.
- Standardized packing on skids or in crates reduces handling damage, cutting claim exposure and downtime.
- Predictable rating accelerates procurement-to-deployment for oilfield and water-treatment jobs, improving schedule reliability.
