How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Rate and bill at Class 77.5 under “Tools, drilling, NOI” and flag the shipment as hazardous on the BOL to align carrier handling and tariffs.
- Protect threads and cutting faces with caps and guards, then band to a sturdy pallet or crate with blocking and bracing to stop roll and shift in transit.
- Confirm hazmat requirements: include SDS if lubricants, pressurized components, or residues are present, and list proper shipping names/UN or NA numbers when applicable.
- Control handling risk: keep pieces under common LTL length thresholds, mark lift points, and use ‘Do Not Stack’ cones for long collars or assemblies.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 77.5 simplifies quoting and reduces surprise reclass charges for oilfield tool shipments.
- Clear hazmat declaration minimizes carrier refusals and dwell time at terminals near wellsite lanes.
- Damage prevention on threads and tool joints cuts costly repair, regrind, and claim exposure.
- Accurate NMFC mapping streamlines audits and speeds carrier selection for time‑sensitive rig schedules.
