How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Pad burrs and tine tips individually (foam, corrugated sleeves), then bundle racks with stretch film; use double‑wall boxes for small sheds or a wood crate for mounted sets.
- Block and brace inside the container so pieces cannot shift; add cross-members in crates and dense void fill so points don’t contact walls or fasteners.
- Describe on paperwork: “Antlers or Horns, animal, NOI — boxed/crated, NMFC 14450, Class 250.” Note items are cleaned and dried; verify CITES/USDA rules for exotic species.
- Palletize when possible: edge protectors, straps, and ‘Fragile/Do Not Stack’ labels. Keep nothing protruding beyond the carton or crate footprint.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Accurate rating: Fixed Class 250 avoids reclass and surprise billing when quoted correctly.
- Lower claims: Tip guards and rigid bracing reduce breakage of brittle points, cutting replacement and return freight costs.
- Better cost control on cube: Nest paired antlers and right-size boxes/crates to trim dimensional charges common at high classes.
- Smoother carrier acceptance: Non-hazardous, boxed/crated freight meets LTL handling norms—ideal for taxidermy shops, ranch sales, and trophy logistics.
