| 14490.00 | Apparatus, carbon dioxide or oxygen control, food storage area, in boxes or crates | 92.5 |
How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Put NMFC 14490 and Class 92.5 on the BOL and specify packaging as “boxes” or “crates” so carriers don’t default to density rules.
- Protect sensitive electronics and sensors with foam-in-place or dense bubble, then immobilize components; in crates, block and brace to prevent panel flex.
- Do not ship gas cylinders with the apparatus. Send CO2 bottles or oxygen tanks separately to maintain non-hazmat status and avoid refused freight.
- Moisture matters in cold-chain gear—bag units in poly, add desiccant packs, and use tilt/shock indicators for controls used in ripening rooms or walk-in coolers.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 92.5 gives predictable LTL rating, simplifying quotes and avoiding density disputes.
- Non-hazardous classification helps bypass hazmat surcharges and carrier restrictions, reducing total landed cost.
- Accurate packaging notation (boxed or crated) minimizes reclass/rebill risk and shortens claims cycles.
- Fewer in-transit failures keep cold rooms and ripening facilities online, protecting inventory quality and revenue.
