Notes

Note 145112: NOTE-Provisions on solidified (hydrogenated) oils will apply when manufactured either by the cold press process or by the hydrogenation of vegetable oils or fish or sea animal oils; but will not apply on vegetable oil shortening in semisolid or plastic form. When shipped in drums, shipper must certify on bill of lading that the commodity does not consist of vegetable oil shortening in semisolid or plastic form.

How to Determine Your Class

To find the correct freight class for your shipment:

  1. Choose packaging that matches the form: UN-rated HDPE drums or IBC totes for liquids; lined pails or boxed blocks with poly liners for solidified oils.
  2. Print a precise BOL line: “Oils, inedible, NOI (fatty acids/alcohols), NMFC 145100.” Add “Not for human consumption” and note non-hazardous status.
  3. Plan temperature protection for high-pour-point oils (palm, tall oil). Request Protect From Freezing in winter or use insulating blankets to prevent solidification.
  4. Prevent leaks and claims: torque drum bungs, cap IBC valves, use absorbent pads on pallets, shrink-wrap tightly, and keep orientation arrows upright.

Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.

Business Value

  • Unified NMFC for many inedible oils streamlines quoting and cuts reclass/rebill risk.
  • Non-hazardous designation avoids hazmat fees and broadens carrier options.
  • Right packaging and temp notes reduce spill, freeze, and cleanup claims, lowering chargebacks.
  • Efficient unitization with drums or IBCs speeds loading and can improve LTL rates by minimizing handling.
