How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Use NMFC 145620 (Class 92.5) for any armored car with a mounted turret; include necessary gear secured inside or boxed and shipped with the vehicle on the same PRO.
- Document turret lockouts and weapon status. If firearms are present, include deactivation and serial inventory, and follow carrier rules for battery disconnects and minimal fuel.
- Specify securement: four-point chains to rated tie-downs, wheel chocks, blocked turret rotation, and padding on protrusions to protect finishes and optics.
- Plan accessorials early—appointment delivery, secure yards, enclosed transport or tarping, and export/ITAR paperwork if the unit will cross borders.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 92.5 eliminates density calculations, improving quote accuracy and preventing unexpected reclass charges.
- Vehicle plus boxed equipment can move under a single commodity line, streamlining the BOL and reducing handling risk and touchpoints.
- Using the proper ordnance-group description speeds carrier vetting for high-value shipments and reduces tender rejections or insurance disputes.
- Consistent class enables true rate benchmarking across LTL, volume LTL, and partial truckload to lower total landed cost.
