How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Quote and book as NMFC 145680, Class 100. Note on the BOL: “Army tank turret gunnery trainer—training equipment, non-hazardous” to prevent hazmat holds.
- Pack in a rigid wood crate or heavy-duty corrugated box with internal blocking and bracing. Example: lag-bolt the base to a skid, add foam-in-place around optics, and band with steel strapping.
- Stabilize the center of gravity. Mark lift points, add “Fork From Base Only” labels, and use Tip-N-Tell or ShockWatch indicators to discourage rough handling.
- Control corrosion and dust: wrap sensitive mechanisms in VCI film, add desiccant packs, and line crates with poly sheeting if the route includes humid or coastal lanes.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Predictable pricing: fixed Class 100 avoids density disputes and reclass fees for this specialized training equipment.
- Faster throughput: clearly labeled non-hazardous ordnance training gear reduces terminal inspections and unnecessary hazmat delays.
- Lower claim risk: approved boxed or crated packaging with proper bracing protects delicate sights and training electronics, reducing repair costs.
- Carrier acceptance: standard LTL networks handle crated/boxed units without special permits, improving routing options and transit reliability.
