How to Determine Your Class

To find the correct freight class for your shipment:

  1. Identify the material and build: aluminum or aluminum/steel combo at 16-gauge or thicker, under 5 gallons. Thinner cans or larger capacities may rate differently.
  2. Choose packaging method per your workflow: ship loose with banded, stretch-wrapped pallet layers, or in cartons with dividers to prevent scuffing and lid deformation.
  3. Mark the BOL with NMFC 145880 and state “loose” or “packages.” Provide accurate count, pallet dimensions, and weight to avoid reweigh/reclass fees even though the class is fixed.
  4. Verify cans are empty, clean, and closed. Remove any prior hazard markings and use corner protectors and slip sheets to keep rigid rims from denting during LTL handling.

Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.

Business Value

  • Fixed Class 110 simplifies quoting and billing—no density math, faster rate shopping, and fewer reclass disputes.
  • Non-hazardous status reduces paperwork and surcharges, accelerating dock processing for defense, industrial, and tooling supply chains.
  • 16-gauge-plus construction lowers damage risk, improving claim outcomes and protecting margins on repeat LTL moves.
  • Flexibility to ship loose or packaged lets you optimize labor time versus cube utilization based on seasonality or lane pricing.
