How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Pack in sturdy corrugated boxes with cell dividers or molded inserts to separate each steel magazine; add VCI paper or poly bags to limit corrosion and scuffing.
- Verify all magazines are empty and contain no ammunition; mark cartons with a simple note such as “Empty – No Ammunition” to prevent carrier holds.
- Complete the BOL exactly: “NMFC 145910, Cartridge Magazines, steel, in boxes, Class 100, non-haz” and list carton count, dimensions, and weights accurately.
- Palletize boxed units square to the deck, use corner protectors and a top cap, then stretch-wrap and band; distribute weight evenly and keep stack heights within carrier limits.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 100 removes density calculations, enabling quicker quotes and fewer reclass fees.
- Non-hazardous designation broadens carrier availability and avoids hazmat surcharges while meeting Ordnance Group handling expectations.
- Box packaging with internal separation reduces metal-to-metal abrasion, cutting claim rates and preserving product finish.
- Precise NMFC 145910 descriptions speed dock checks and reduce inspection delays, improving on-time performance and cost predictability.
