How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Crate directors and base units with rigid blocking and shock cushioning; bolt the crate to a pallet and add moisture protection (desiccant and wrap) for sensitive mechanisms.
- Box smaller components like porter bars and linkages in double‑wall cartons with partitions, then unitize on a pallet with corner boards and no overhang to prevent crush damage.
- Label clearly: “This Side Up,” “Fragile,” and “Do Not Stack.” Apply shock/tilt indicators and list NMFC 146050, Class 300, Non-Hazardous on the BOL and packing list.
- Pre-advise carriers the freight is Ordnance Group but non-hazmat. Request limited handling, liftgate if no dock, and add cargo insurance for high-value director assemblies.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Predictable rating: Fixed Class 300 removes density disputes and helps avoid carrier reclass fees and billing delays.
- Lower risk of damage claims: Crates for directors and boxed parts for accessories align with the item’s packing note, reducing costly rework and downtime.
- Defense/aerospace compliance: Packaging and clear NMFC/Ordnance Group notation support vendor audits and export documentation clarity.
- Cost control: Non-hazardous status avoids hazmat surcharges, while palletized boxed parts enable consolidation to hit better LTL rate breaks.
