How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Pack each fuze setter in rigid, cushioned protection (foam-in-place or custom-cut foam) and add desiccant; use ESD bags if electronics are exposed.
- Lock moving parts and remove detachable calibration heads or batteries. Cap connectors and include dust covers to prevent transit damage.
- For LTL, place the inner carton in a small crate or heavy-duty double-wall box; add shock/tilt indicators and band to a pallet to stop tipping.
- Bill of lading: list NMFC 146090 and describe as “Fuze Setters, non-explosive ordnance tool.” Add serial numbers for chain-of-custody and declare value for coverage.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Non-hazardous status avoids hazmat surcharges and simplifies carrier selection across standard LTL networks.
- Using the correct NMFC item helps prevent reclass or reweigh fees, protecting margins on defense support shipments.
- Robust packaging reduces damage claims and avoids costly downtime for mission-critical maintenance and test operations.
- Proactive planning for site access and security (e.g., limited access pickup/delivery) reduces unexpected accessorials and delays.
