How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Confirm the items are inert components and eligible for transport; note NMFC 146130 and Class 100 on the BOL, and state “boxed artillery barrels/tubes (NOI), non-hazardous.”
- Use heavy double- or triple-wall boxes with V-blocks, end caps, thread/bore protectors, and rust inhibitor wrap or desiccant to prevent metal damage in transit.
- Center the barrel in the box and block-and-brace to stop roll or sway; mark weight at each handhold and add orientation arrows for safe handling.
- Plan accessorials for long or heavy pieces—forklift or liftgate, residential or appointment delivery—and verify any ITAR/EAR or defense-trade documentation before tender.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 100 simplifies rating and helps avoid costly reclass or rebill disputes for ordnance components.
- Non-hazardous status broadens carrier options and reduces compliance overhead versus restricted materials.
- Proper boxing and internal bracing cut claim risk, keeping refurbishment timelines and project budgets on track.
- Clear NMFC labeling accelerates carrier screening within the Ordnance Group, reducing delays and storage fees.
