How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Document the build type—solid iron or wood-and-iron—and note any protruding foils or vanes; bag and tag loose hardware to prevent loss in transit.
- Crate on a 4-way entry skid, bolting through mounting lugs and blocking the leading and trailing edges; use edge protectors and polyester strapping to prevent chafe.
- Apply corrosion control for ocean-adjacent routes: VCI wrap, desiccant packs, and heat-sealed poly, then mark center of gravity and lift points on the crate.
- List NMFC 146390 on the BOL with full dimensions and post-pack weight; include delivery contact for port or base access and verify any EAR/ITAR screening if applicable.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Non-hazardous ordnance equipment broadens carrier options and can lower LTL rates versus hazmat-designated cargo.
- Clear NMFC reference reduces reclass bills, inspections, and accessorial surprises tied to ambiguous descriptions.
- Rigid crating and corrosion mitigation cut the likelihood of fin or vane damage, minimizing claims and downtime.
- Accurate specs and site pre-clearance speed port or defense-facility deliveries, improving project timelines and labor utilization.
