How to Determine Your Class

To find the correct freight class for your shipment:

  1. Pack brass, bronze, or copper bands in strong corrugated cartons with dividers or sleeves to prevent ring-to-ring abrasion; add VCI paper or desiccant for corrosion control.
  2. Unitize cartons on a pallet with stretch wrap and two perpendicular straps; keep heavy small parts low on the pallet to avoid top-heavy stacks.
  3. Label cartons with part numbers, alloy type, and “Non-Hazardous Ordnance Component” to help carriers identify the commodity and avoid unnecessary hazmat handling.
  4. Provide exact count and weight per carton on the BOL; note “Class 60, packaged” to reduce reclass risk and speed up LTL quote validation.

Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.

Business Value

  • Straight Class 60 rating helps secure lower LTL rates for dense metal rings compared to higher-class miscellaneous hardware.
  • Non-hazardous status streamlines booking and reduces accessorial exposure tied to hazmat paperwork or special handling.
  • Clear item description (projectile bands, packaged) minimizes inspection disputes and chargebacks for reclass or NMFC misidentification.
  • Consistent packaging (cartons on pallets with protective materials) lowers damage rates on precision-machined bands, preserving downstream machining and fit-up tolerances.
