How to Determine Your Class

To find the correct freight class for your shipment:

  1. Confirm the item is an empty cash or parcel carrier (textile, canvas, leather, or synthetic) shipping in standard packages—not actual currency or parcel contents.
  2. Pad and bag each unit to protect buckles, zippers, and rigid panels; use dividers or foam to stop scuffs. Example: 24 carriers per carton with kraft interleaf and void fill.
  3. Palletize cartons on 48x40 with interlocked layers, corner boards, and stretch wrap. Mark cartons with NMFC 147200 and Class 100 for fast check-in.
  4. On the BOL, list piece count and materials, note non-hazardous status, and insure to product value. Avoid descriptions that could be confused with shipping cash.

Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.

Business Value

  • Predictable pricing: fixed Class 100 rating streamlines quotes and budgeting across LTL carriers.
  • Lower reclass risk: simple, non-density classification reduces inspections, disputes, and surprise charges.
  • Packaging efficiency: “in packages” allows standard cartons, cutting prep time and material costs.
  • Retail and uniform rollouts: consolidate carriers with other outfit items to reduce touches and accessorials.
