How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Confirm the item is an empty cash or parcel carrier (textile, canvas, leather, or synthetic) shipping in standard packages—not actual currency or parcel contents.
- Pad and bag each unit to protect buckles, zippers, and rigid panels; use dividers or foam to stop scuffs. Example: 24 carriers per carton with kraft interleaf and void fill.
- Palletize cartons on 48x40 with interlocked layers, corner boards, and stretch wrap. Mark cartons with NMFC 147200 and Class 100 for fast check-in.
- On the BOL, list piece count and materials, note non-hazardous status, and insure to product value. Avoid descriptions that could be confused with shipping cash.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Predictable pricing: fixed Class 100 rating streamlines quotes and budgeting across LTL carriers.
- Lower reclass risk: simple, non-density classification reduces inspections, disputes, and surprise charges.
- Packaging efficiency: “in packages” allows standard cartons, cutting prep time and material costs.
- Retail and uniform rollouts: consolidate carriers with other outfit items to reduce touches and accessorials.
