How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Mark the BOL with NMFC 147480, Class 85, and describe the shipment as complete military field lighting outfits to keep the kit rated under the Outfits Group.
- Package components in sturdy cartons or wood crates: cap generator exhausts, protect control panels, bag fasteners, and coil cables on reels to prevent abrasion.
- Drain fuel and oil from generator-engine units, purge lines, and tag as “dry” to maintain non-hazardous status and avoid carrier refusal.
- Verify scope against NMFC note item 147482: exclude searchlights and aviation beacons, and ship the set as a unified outfit to avoid reclass.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 85 simplifies quoting and avoids density disputes, reducing unexpected reclass fees.
- Non-hazardous status accelerates carrier acceptance and cuts paperwork time for tenders.
- Outfits rating lets you ship complete lighting sets together, limiting accessorials from split pieces or mismatched NMFC items.
- Proper crating and cable management reduce transit damage, lowering claims and downtime for field operations.
