How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Print NMFC 147490 and Class 300 on your BOL, and describe the item as trailer-mounted light towers with generator and telescoping mast.
- Secure the mast fully lowered and latched; pad lighting heads, chock wheels, and use four tie-down points. Example: two 2-inch ratchet straps per side across axle mounts.
- Drain fuel and disconnect batteries to keep the shipment non-hazardous, then note “fuel drained” in special instructions for carrier clarity.
- Avoid liftgates; request dock or flatbed pickup. Share full length including tongue and deployed stabilizers to prevent re-delivery or accessorial delays.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 300 simplifies quoting across carriers and eliminates density calculations, reducing reclass fees.
- Non-hazardous status broadens carrier options and avoids hazmat surcharges for lower total landed cost.
- Clear NMFC use improves claim defensibility and lowers OS&D risk when masts and fixtures are properly secured.
- Accurate accessorial planning (jobsite delivery, flatbed, limited access) prevents surprise charges and protects margins on rental or project timelines.
