How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- List the set as a complete outfit on the BOL: “1 Box – Firefighting military outfit, NMFC 147500, Class 85.” Include total weight and piece count for quick rating.
- Pack tools, extinguishers, lanterns/flashlights, and first-aid kits in a single heavy-duty box with dividers and foam; strap ladders and tarpaulins so nothing shifts in transit.
- For trailer-mounted power pumping units shipped loose, chock wheels, band to the deck or skid, protect controls, and note “loose trailer-mounted pump per NMFC 147500” on paperwork.
- Skip density calculations—this is a fixed class. Provide dimensions for capacity planning and mark orientation so lenses and gauges stay upright.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 85 simplifies quoting and prevents reclass charges tied to density disputes.
- Outfit grouping lets diverse components move under one line item, cutting documentation time and billing complexity.
- Non-hazardous status broadens carrier options and reduces special paperwork and accessorial risk.
- Option to ship trailer-mounted pumps loose can eliminate crating costs and speed deployment when secured correctly.
