How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Stabilize the wheeled assembly on a skid: chock the wheels, add blocking, and secure with two or more ratchet straps; face valves inward and cap all ports.
- Protect the system: relieve pressure, drain residual liquids, cap or plug lines, and shield compressors and gauges with corner boards or foam before stretch-wrapping.
- Document clearly on the BOL: “Gas Transfer outfit with power pump, compressor, refrigeration apparatus and tank, mounted on wheels — NMFC 147540, Class 150.”
- Plan handling: specify forklift or liftgate needs, note “Do Not Stack” if tall, tag center of gravity, and lock casters to prevent rolling during transit.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 150 simplifies quoting and avoids density disputes, reducing reclass risk and surprise adjustments.
- Non-hazardous status broadens carrier options and helps sidestep hazmat surcharges and paperwork delays.
- “Outfits” coverage lets you ship the complete assembly as one line item, cutting admin time and mismatch claims.
- Clear NMFC labeling speeds dock handling and can lower OS&D exposure, protecting compressors, pumps, and tanks from costly damage.
