How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- List the item on your BOL as “Tank car heater, NMFC 147550, Class 100” to avoid density questions and reclass bills.
- If the unit is wheeled, chock and strap the wheels, then secure to a skid or crate; cap hose ends and protect controls from impact.
- Drain fuel and oils from the internal combustion engine and pumps; use absorbent pads and drip protection for any residuals.
- Center the weight on the pallet and use four-way lift access; add a top-frame or crate for units with protruding blowers or steam components.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 100 simplifies rating and quoting, reducing reclass disputes and surprise charges.
- Non-hazardous status helps you avoid hazmat fees and complex paperwork, speeding tender times.
- Clear item definition (engine, blower, pump, hose) minimizes inspection challenges and OS&D risk.
- Standard LTL handling with skids or crates supports predictable transit and easier consolidation from rail yards or terminals.
