How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Use this NMFC when shipping complete military surveying kits in boxes—e.g., aiming circles, theodolites, rangefinders, tripods, cables, and data collectors—listed as one outfit.
- Box precision optics in foam-lined cases, then double-wall the outer box; add desiccant, corner protection, and shock/tilt indicators to protect alignment during LTL moves.
- Include a contents manifest with serial numbers and any calibration certificates; if exporting, screen for ECCN/ITAR and secure end-user documentation before pickup.
- Measure and weigh each box accurately; class may not be density-based, but dimensions still affect rates and oversize fees. Mark “This Side Up” and fragile zones clearly.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Single “Outfits” item streamlines quoting and prevents reclass fees versus rating each instrument separately.
- Non-hazardous status avoids hazmat surcharges and simplifies paperwork, expediting tender and transit.
- Engineered boxing practices reduce damage on precision optics, minimizing claims and mission downtime.
- Consolidated boxed kits lower handling touches and can reduce accessorials tied to loose, mixed pieces.
