How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Pack torch handles, tips, and regulators in a partitioned inner carton; cap regulator inlets and coil hose in wide loops, then zip‑tie to prevent kinks.
- Pad goggles and small tips in pouches or a lidded tray so lenses and threads don’t abrade; add a rigid top sheet to stop punctures from steel parts.
- If shipping a steel box, empty cylinder rack, or hand truck, bolt or band it inside the crate and block/brace to eliminate movement during LTL handling.
- Mark the BOL as “tools only—no gas cylinders.” Ship in boxes or wood crates as allowed by NMFC; expect Class 100 with no density statement required.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Predictable pricing: fixed Class 100 rating streamlines quotes and keeps LTL charges consistent across carriers.
- Non‑hazardous status avoids hazmat fees, extra paperwork, and limited network options—faster booking and fewer exceptions.
- Kit‑friendly classification lets you consolidate torches, tips, regulators, hose, goggles, and racks as one unit, reducing handling and claim risk.
- Choice of boxes or crates helps balance cost versus protection—use crates for jobsite routes, boxes for standard dock‑to‑dock moves.
