How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Ship the unit dry: drain fuel and oil, cap suction/discharge ports, and secure hoses; add absorbent pads under the engine base to prevent seepage.
- For trailer-mounted pumps, chock wheels, engage the brake, and strap the axle and tongue to blocking or a pallet; include the tongue length in your dimensions.
- If on a hand truck, place the assembly on a 48×40 pallet, strap in an X-pattern over the frame, and block the wheels to stop roll during LTL handling.
- Declare as one complete outfit: power pump with engine, wheeled or trailer-mounted, NMFC 147830 Class 100; list serial numbers and note any protective cage.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Predictable pricing: fixed Class 100 with no density calculation reduces rating disputes and speeds up quotes.
- Non-hazardous status broadens carrier options and helps avoid hazmat surcharges or paperwork delays.
- Single-outfit listing (pump plus engine) minimizes reclassification risk and cuts admin time on BOLs.
- Proper immobilization of wheeled gear lowers damage risk, preventing rework costs and claim exposure.
