How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- State on the BOL: “Portable metal shelter containing tools and work tables, loose – NMFC 148000, Class 110.” Confirm it’s not wheeled, self-propelled, or vehicle-mounted.
- Prep the shelter for transit: lock tool drawers, secure benches, cap sharp edges, and band interior contents. Use desiccants to protect instruments from moisture.
- Choose handling to match weight and COG: lift from designated pick points or with a spreader bar; for forklifts, use long forks and block under the base to prevent punch-through.
- Block and brace in a dry van with hardwood cribbing, or on flatbed use multi-point straps/chains with edge guards. Example: 8-point securement for a 20-ft shelter.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Predictable pricing with fixed Class 110—no density calculations, fewer reclass disputes and faster quote turnaround.
- Non-hazardous status simplifies carrier selection and avoids hazmat accessorials, reducing total landed cost.
- Clear article definition (not wheeled or vehicle-mounted) minimizes misclassification risk during audits and inspections.
- Optimized mode decisions: LTL for smaller modules, volume LTL/partial truckload for oversized shelters to balance cost with transit speed.
