How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Pack panels flat in rigid packages with foam edge guards and protective interleave over the painted faces; add top and bottom cap sheets to resist bending.
- If unitizing on a pallet for handling, prevent overhang and use corner boards under light banding so straps don’t imprint the paint; add a slip-sheet barrier under stretch wrap.
- Label Do Not Bend and Face Protect, and include orientation arrows. Aim for manageable bundle sizes (e.g., 48 x 84 in) to avoid overlength fees and dock damage.
- On the BOL, use the full description and note Non-hazardous; confirm the applicable class within the 70–150 range with your carrier based on packaging and damage susceptibility.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Stronger, paint-safe packaging can qualify for the lower end of the 70–150 class range, reducing LTL rates on recurring store rollout shipments.
- Surface protection and edge reinforcement cut scratch claims, avoiding rework, reshipments, and missed merchandising reset dates.
- Standardized bundle sizes streamline quoting, reduce accessorial risks (like overlength), and speed cross-dock handling at carriers.
- Non-hazardous materials simplify booking and paperwork, helping you tender faster during time-sensitive retail campaigns.
