How to Determine Your Class

To find the correct freight class for your shipment:

  1. List NMFC 15190 and Class 50 on the BOL with the exact commodity name (Ashes, NOI or Coal Cinders), packaging as boxes, piece count, and pallet count.
  2. Use heavy-duty corrugated boxes with sealed poly liners; if starting with bagged ash, overbox and tape all seams to prevent dust escape.
  3. Palletize evenly with slip sheets and full stretch wrap; add a top cap to contain fines. Example: forty 50 lb boxes on a 48x40 pallet.
  4. Ship only cool, dry material to avoid moisture weight gain or clumping; allow post-combustion cooling time and consider desiccants for humidity control.

Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.

Business Value

  • Fixed Class 50 delivers predictable, often lower LTL pricing for dense, low-value ash materials.
  • Non-hazardous status streamlines carrier acceptance and avoids hazmat paperwork and surcharges.
  • Tight, boxed packaging reduces spill risk and terminal cleanup, minimizing claims and delays.
  • Accurate NMFC use cuts reclass inspections and billing disputes, speeding audits and cash flow.
