How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Use snug inner cartons or partitions: wrap each glass/metal ashtray, bag the weighted pouch to prevent bead or sand leaks, and immobilize both inside the box.
- Choose sturdy corrugated boxes: single-wall for single units, double-wall for multi-packs or hospitality case packs (e.g., 12–24 units) with 2–3 inches of cushioning.
- Weigh every carton accurately. This item ships at fixed Class 85 without density calculations, so carriers bill from actual or dimensional weight and declared count.
- Mark FRAGILE/GLASS where applicable and stack light. Place soft pouches facing inward to avoid pressure points that can crack rims during transit.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Predictable rating at Class 85 reduces reclass risks and audit fees, making quotes consistent for hospitality and retail replenishment.
- Non-hazardous status streamlines carrier selection and tendering, enabling faster LTL bookings and broader service coverage.
- Correct boxing and inner protection cut breakage and leakage claims, preserving margins on bulk orders for casinos, hotels, and smoke shops.
- No density math required saves rating time and improves TMS automation, helping teams price and route shipments more efficiently.
