Notes
Note 15456: NOTE-Does not apply on materials regulated by the U.S. Department of Transportation as hazardous and required to bear a Hazard Class or Hazard Division label or placard. For classes applicable to such hazardous materials, see provisions elsewhere in this Classification.
How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Verify it’s non-hazardous: ambient asphalt, pitch, or tar with no DOT hazard label or placard. Hot mix and coatings don’t apply to this item.
- Calculate density to select the class. Example: a 320 lb pallet at 20 cu ft equals 16 PCF; use the corresponding NMFC class within 50–400.
- Pack to prevent seepage. Use lined boxes or tight-seal pails/drums, add absorbent pads, and stretch-wrap on pallets with no overhang for clean handling.
- Describe it clearly on the BOL: “Asphalt/Pitch/Tar, NOI, NMFC 15455, non-haz, packaged in boxes/pails/drums,” and include total weight and calculated PCF.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Avoid hazmat surcharges and paperwork since this item is non-hazardous, lowering total landed cost.
- Optimize your freight class by increasing density with snug packaging or switching from loose bags to pails/drums to reduce class and rates.
- Accurate NMFC 15455 use and density on the BOL helps prevent reclass fees, inspections, and delivery delays.
- Stackable boxes or pails improve cube utilization, letting you ship more product per pallet and cut LTL costs.
