Classification Details

NMFC Description Class
153060.00 Envelopes or Wrappers, government stamped, in shipments weighing 30,000 pounds or more, see Note, item 153062 0

Notes

Note 153062: NOTE-Applies only when shipped for account of the United States Government on government bills of lading, in trucks protected by government locks or seals. Shipments weighing less than 30,000 pounds or not tendered on government bills of lading will not be taken.

How to Determine Your Class

To find the correct freight class for your shipment:

  1. Verify the shipment meets the 30,000 lb minimum on one bill of lading; if short, reference Note item 153062 or the applicable alternate NMFC.
  2. Pack in clean, dry corrugated cartons with liner sheets and cap boards; unitize on 40x48 pallets with edge protectors, no overhang, and two to four steel or poly bands.
  3. Control humidity and scuffing: stretch-wrap each pallet, add top sheets, use desiccants during humid seasons, and load into dry, sealed trailers.
  4. Maintain custody integrity for government-stamped stock: record seal numbers, carton counts, and pallet IDs, and label discreetly (e.g., “government-stamped paper”) without revealing face values.

Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.

Business Value

  • Qualify for Class 0 at 30,000 lb+, unlocking lower linehaul rates for large mailing campaigns and government print runs.
  • Weight-based classification eliminates density disputes and reclass fees, reducing unexpected carrier adjustments.
  • Non-hazardous paper articles broaden carrier options and speed tendering during peak postal or election cycles.
  • Consolidating print sites to hit the 30,000 lb threshold cuts per-thousand shipping costs; slip sheets improve cube to meet target weights.
