How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Confirm the weight break: scale ticket must show 30,000 lb or more net freight (e.g., 34 skids × 900 lb = 30,600 lb). List NMFC 154100 and Note 153062 on the BOL.
- Unitize tightly: band or stretch-wrap card bundles with cornerboards, then strap to 48x40 pallets. Mark each pallet “Government-Stamped Postal Cards” and keep labels outward facing.
- Choose dry van equipment with moisture protection. Use load bars or air bags to prevent shift, and cap stack heights to avoid edge crush on lower bundles.
- Maintain custody controls: record trailer seal numbers, require driver count, keep carton/pallet counts on the BOL, and restrict mixed freight in the same load.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Unlocks Class 0 pricing at the 30,000 lb threshold, driving significant cost-per-pound savings on large paper mailer movements.
- Weight-qualified rating removes density calculations, cutting down reclass fees and dispute risk while speeding up rating and billing.
- Uniform pallets of cards load and cube efficiently, improving trailer utilization and reducing handling time at origin and delivery docks.
- Clear labeling and security practices reduce loss exposure on government-stamped materials, lowering claims and potential insurance costs.
