How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Pack components in separate, sealed containers: line boxes with poly liners, close drums tightly, and add absorbent pads around plasticizer to prevent weeping.
- Palletize for stability: band and stretch-wrap; use corner boards and a top sheet. Avoid overhang and limit stacking on pigment bags to prevent crushing.
- Document clearly on the BOL: “Paving Binder—plastic, plasticizer, pigment in separate containers, NMFC 154860, Class 60, Non-hazardous,” and include SDS sheets if available.
- Manage environment and compatibility: keep away from foodstuffs and odor-sensitive freight, protect from high heat during summer transit, and mark ‘Do Not Top-Load’ for drums.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 60 rating enables predictable quotes and avoids density reclass charges.
- Non-hazardous status removes hazmat fees and simplifies carrier selection and routing.
- Separate-container packaging reduces cross-contamination and spill claims, improving delivery quality for paving crews.
- Flexible packaging options (bags, boxes, drums) let you right-size shipments to weight breaks, lowering LTL costs and handling time.
