How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Print NMFC 154900 and Class 70 on the BOL and labels to prevent reclass or rebill when tendering peat or peat moss.
- Unitize boxes or sealed bags on pallets: use a top cap, corner boards, and full stretch wrap (including a bottom ‘belly band’) to contain dust and prevent sifting.
- Protect from moisture. Specify dry van service, add “Keep Dry” handling notes, and avoid stow next to liquids or chemicals that could leak.
- Limit crushing. Request light top-load or non-stack when shipping compressed bales, and avoid placing heavy freight above peat to preserve package integrity.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Predictable pricing with a fixed Class 70—no density breakpoints to calculate, streamlining quotes and audits.
- Non-hazardous designation reduces compliance steps and avoids hazmat fees, accelerating booking and pickup.
- Boxed or properly bagged unit loads cut OS&D risk, lowering claims and improving on-time, shelf-ready delivery for garden centers and growers.
- Clear single-class classification minimizes reclass charges and delays, keeping LTL operations efficient during seasonal demand spikes.
