How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Write the BOL as: “Place Mats, counter or table, NOI, in boxes — NMFC 155760, Class 85.” Keep the “in boxes” phrase to match the tariff.
- Pack mats flat in rigid corrugated cartons; interleave with kraft sheets or poly sleeves to prevent scuffs and moisture, especially for vinyl or lacquered bamboo.
- Palletize cartons with no overhang, add corner boards, and strap plus stretch wrap. Mark “Do Not Bend” to protect cork and bamboo from warping.
- Ship retail sets by master carton (e.g., 12-pk placemats per box) for faster receiving. Even though class is fixed, include carton count, dims, and weight for accurate quotes.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 85 eliminates density calculations, speeding quotes and reducing reclass risk for mixed-material placemats.
- NOI coverage fits fabric, vinyl, bamboo, or cork SKUs under one listing, simplifying catalogs and compliance across product lines.
- Boxed-only requirement encourages protective packaging that lowers damage claims and chargebacks to retailers or restaurant groups.
- Predictable class improves budgeting and rate negotiations for seasonal bulk runs, such as hospitality rollouts or retail resets.
