How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Confirm the item is solid, non-foam plastic and note its form and resin (e.g., ABS sheet, PVC pipe, HDPE molded parts) to match the correct item within this group.
- Package by form: sheets and rods on blocked pallets with edge protectors and bands; film rolls on protected cores with end caps; pellets in lined gaylord boxes secured to pallets.
- Prevent scuffing and warp: use interleaf sheets, corner boards, and tight stretch wrap; avoid pallet overhang and brace long extrusions to stop flex during transit.
- Describe clearly on the BOL: Plastic Materials, Non-Expanded, include piece count, dimensions, weight, and resin type to speed carrier review and reduce reclass risk.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Accurate grouping selection cuts reclass fees and dispute time by aligning your commodity with the correct NMFC pathway.
- Non-hazardous status enables broader carrier options and simpler routing with fewer compliance steps.
- Form-specific packaging lowers damage rates on abrasion-prone plastics, reducing claims and replacement costs.
- Clear commodity details accelerate quoting and tender acceptance, improving transit reliability and freight rate consistency.
