Notes
Note 156241: NOTE-Does not apply on materials regulated by the U.S. Department of Transportation as hazardous and required to bear a Hazard Class or Hazard Division label or placard. For classes applicable to such hazardous materials, see provisions elsewhere in this Classification.
How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Confirm the product is a non‑hazardous plastic liquid and not covered by NMFC 46030 or 46032; list “NMFC 156240, Class 60” on the BOL with the full product name (e.g., acrylic polymer emulsion).
- Use tight-closure containers inside strong boxes or approved drums; when boxing, follow Package 2516: seal closures, add cushioning/absorbent, and line cartons with poly bags to contain leaks.
- Palletize without overhang; strap or stretch‑wrap pails or drums, apply ‘This Side Up’ and ‘Liquid’ handling labels, and keep valves or bungs protected from impact.
- Note temperature needs on the BOL for emulsions sensitive to freezing or heat (e.g., “Protect From Freezing”) and select carriers that accept liquids to avoid service exceptions.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 60 simplifies quoting and budgeting—no density calculations, fewer reclass risks, and more predictable LTL rates.
- Non‑hazardous status removes hazmat fees and paperwork, widening carrier options and improving transit availability.
- Package 2516 compliance reduces leak claims and OS&D disputes, lowering accessorials and avoiding cleanup surcharges.
- Consistent NMFC usage on paperwork speeds audits and accelerates payment cycles by preventing billing disputes.
