How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Match packaging to form and weight: sturdy boxes for cut sheets and rods, wood crates for heavy blocks, or use NMFC Package 2031/2085 when bundling.
- Do not ship in rolls—only bars, blocks, rods, or flat sheets qualify. Add edge guards and interleaf sheets to prevent abrasion and corner crush.
- Secure units to prevent shift: band sheets on dunnage, cap rod ends, and use cross-ties or blocking in crates to stop lateral movement during LTL handling.
- Print on the BOL: “NMFC 156900, Class 60, Non-Hazardous.” This speeds inspections and reduces reclass risk across terminals.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 60 delivers predictable LTL rates without density calculations, shaving minutes off every quote.
- Broader packaging options (boxes, crates, Packages 2031/2085) lower damage frequency and claims expense for rigid laminates.
- Accurate NMFC 156900 usage reduces reclass fees and dwell time, improving on-time performance through cross-docks.
- Right-sized packs for sheets and bars improve pallet cube, cutting cost per shipped square foot or linear foot.
