Note 157231: NOTE-For provisions applicable to pneumatic tires mounted on wheels, see items 12420 and 197230, with the final determination of item dependent upon the involved wheel and tire combination.
How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Confirm the product is an unmounted pneumatic rubber tire; if it’s on a rim or part of a wheel assembly, use the mounted tire items instead to avoid misclassifying.
- Pack in paired or banded sets with the beads facing inward, add corrugated sidewall guards, and palletize to a stable footprint (e.g., 48x40) to keep tires from deforming in transit.
- Limit vertical stacking to prevent flattening; use stretch wrap lightly over the tread and banding through the center, and avoid compressing the sidewalls to maintain shape.
- List “NMFC 157230, Class 110” on the BOL and labels, note the count and packaging method (e.g., 40 tires, banded pairs on 2 pallets), and request non-stack if the load is near top-deck height.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Predictable rating: fixed Class 110 simplifies quoting and helps lock in accurate LTL pricing without density calculations.
- Fewer reclass fees: clear labeling as unmounted tires cuts disputes with carriers and reduces costly billing corrections.
- Lower damage risk: proper banding and palletization minimize scuffing and bead distortion, reducing claims and reship costs.
- Better cube control: nesting or pairing tires improves trailer utilization, curbing oversized handling fees and shortening transit delays.
