Note 157522: NOTE-Applies only on platforms designed to be used in conjunction with aircraft and vehicles equipped with surface conveyor casters or rollers.
How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Confirm eligibility against NMFC Note 157522—aluminum skins, solid wood core, and tie-down rings. List NMFC 157520, Class 70 on the BOL.
- Package in rigid crates or tight, steel-banded bundles; block and cap rings so they do not protrude. Example: five platforms bundled with cross-battens and four bands.
- Protect aluminum surfaces and wood edges with non-marking dunnage, corner protectors, and wrap; keep moisture off the wood core during transit.
- Provide true piece count, total weight, and footprints. Class is fixed, but accurate dimensions prevent oversize fees and improve trailer planning.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Predictable pricing: fixed Class 70 avoids density reclass and stabilizes LTL quotes for large aircraft handling platforms.
- Lower claims risk when rings are immobilized and edges protected, reducing OS&D and downtime for MRO or OEM cargo operations.
- Fewer billing disputes by citing Note 157522 and packing as crates or bundles in line with carrier rules.
- Operational efficiency—bundling multiple platforms speeds loading, reduces touches, and may curb accessorial charges.
