Classification Details

NMFC Description Class
157500.00 Plates, bench, lapping, layout surface or surface, in boxes or crates:
157500.01 Steel 70
157500.02 Stone 50

How to Determine Your Class

To find the correct freight class for your shipment:

  1. Crate or box the plate with the finished face up and clearly marked; use rigid blocking and foam edge guards to prevent chipping, especially on granite plates.
  2. Protect cast iron plates with oil wrap and VCI paper; seal the box or crate to keep moisture out during LTL cross‑dock transfers.
  3. Build a skid or crate with fork pockets and no overhang so lift tines don’t contact the surface; add shock/tilt indicators for calibration‑grade plates.
  4. On the BOL, list: bench/lapping/layout surface plate, material (granite or cast iron), surface size and thickness, and packaging (box or crate); confirm the applicable subclass within the 50–70 range per your tariff.

Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.

Business Value

  • Favorable NMFC classes 50–70 help dense plates move at lower CWT rates compared to bulkier goods.
  • Non‑hazmat status streamlines carrier selection and avoids hazmat surcharges or paperwork delays.
  • Proper crating minimizes edge damage and claim risk, reducing rework, returns, and hidden costs.
  • Clear, item‑specific descriptions cut reweigh/reclass fees and speed up quoting and dispatch.
