How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Select sturdy boxes or wood crates and use snug partitions so asphalt/wax paper plugs don’t abrade or deform in transit.
- Keep units dry and cool; asphalt and waxed paper components can soften under heat or moisture. Add a liner and desiccant when shipping in humid regions.
- Block and brace within the crate to prevent compression damage; avoid over-stacking heavy reels or tooling on top of plug cartons.
- Label as NMFC 157540, Class 60 on the BOL to prevent reclass, and note “paper roll plugs” for clear dock handling.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.

- Non-hazardous material reduces accessorial risk and simplifies carrier selection.
- Box or crate packaging streamlines LTL consolidation, cutting handling time and claim exposure.
- Accurate code usage supports faster quotes and cleaner audits for converters and paper mills.
