How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Label the BOL clearly: “Billiard/Pool Table Slate Slabs, finished or unfinished, in boxes or crates — NMFC 15810, Class 85.” This avoids reclass and speeds carrier approval.
- Crate for rigidity and edge protection. Use screw-fastened wood, internal foam sheets, edge guards, and cross-bracing; if boxed, choose double-wall cartons and always secure to a palletized base for forklift handling.
- Distribute weight evenly and create 4-way forklift access. Band the crate with corner protectors, add ‘This Side Up’ and ‘Do Not Stack’ labels, and consider shock/tip indicators for long hauls.
- Plan accessorials up front. Request liftgate or forklift at pickup/delivery, schedule appointments for heavy pieces, and provide exact outer dimensions and weight for accurate LTL quotes (class is fixed, not density-based).
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 85 simplifies pricing—no density calculation—reducing quote time and minimizing reclass fees or disputes.
- Proper crating and edge protection slash claim risk on brittle slate, protecting margins and delivery timelines.
- Non-hazardous status broadens carrier choices and lanes, often yielding better transit times and competitive rates.
- Consolidating panels into one reinforced crate typically lowers handling units and can improve LTL rates versus multiple loose boxes.
