Notes
Note 15887: NOTE-Shipper must certify on shipping orders and bills of lading at time of shipment that the actual value per pound of the property does not exceed 30 cents. If the shipper fails to so certify the actual value per pound, item 15890, naming 'Pinspotters or Pinsetters, automatic, power operated, NOI,' will apply.
How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Confirm the item qualifies: used, dismantled automatic pinsetters without masking units and valued at or below $0.30 per pound. List NMFC 15885, Class 70, and note “for reconditioning/salvage” on the BOL.
- Even when shipping loose, consolidate parts where possible: band frames, motors, and gearboxes to sturdy skids, block and brace, add edge protectors, and wrap control boxes to prevent terminal damage.
- Prepare for heavy, awkward pieces: provide accurate piece counts, mark center-of-gravity on large frames, and request forklift or liftgate service if you don’t have a dock.
- Document condition and value clearly: include serials if available, actual weight, and per-pound value to align carrier liability with the salvage-only status.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Predictable pricing at Class 70 helps budget LTL costs for bulky bowling machinery while avoiding higher-class penalties.
- Salvage-only value (≤ $0.30/lb) limits carrier liability and can lower insurance needs, reducing total landed cost.
- Using the correct NMFC 15885 code cuts reclass risks, fewer billing disputes, and faster terminal throughput.
- Non-hazardous status avoids hazmat fees and paperwork, while skidded or loose options minimize crating expenses and speed turnaround.
