How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- List the commodity on the BOL as: “Cable Hangers or Shields, zinc or zinc-and-steel, in boxes — NMFC 160050, Class 85” to prevent reclass fees.
- Pack sharp-edged brackets with corrugated dividers or poly sleeves to protect the zinc finish and avoid abrasion; add a moisture barrier to prevent white rust.
- Palletize boxed units with edge protectors and two to three steel or poly straps; keep cartons flush to a 40x48 pallet and avoid overhang for dock handling.
- Group boxes by size or SKU (e.g., zinc-only vs. zinc-steel) and mark piece counts on each carton to speed jobsite receiving and OS&D checks.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 85 simplifies rate shopping and reduces reclassification risk versus density-based items, helping stabilize LTL costs.
- One code covers zinc and zinc–steel hangers/shields, streamlining SKUs and documentation across utility and transmission projects.
- Boxed packaging lowers damage probability and claims, which can improve carrier choice and lead to better negotiated freight rates.
- Non-hazardous status eliminates hazmat surcharges and paperwork, shortening booking time and easing jobsite delivery coordination.
