How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- List on the BOL as “Ground rods, steel/copper clad, NMFC 160160, Class 50” and note packaging as bundles, crates, or palletized packages.
- Band rods into tight bundles with steel strapping and end protectors, then place on skids; request side-load or forklift pocket access for 8–10 ft lengths.
- Material type (steel, copper clad/coated/plated) doesn’t change the class—include it in the description for receiving accuracy and insurance records.
- Avoid loose singles: keep uniform bundle lengths and add belly bands to prevent bowing during LTL handling and to maintain the “in packages” requirement.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 50 provides predictable LTL quotes and avoids density-based reclassifications.
- Non-hazardous status speeds carrier acceptance and reduces compliance overhead.
- Proper bundling lowers damage risk on long rods, cutting claims and jobsite delays.
- Using NMFC 160160 helps prevent inspection fees and surprise overlength re-rate issues.
