How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Use sturdy corrugated boxes (double-wall or 44–48 ECT) and add dividers or foam to keep copper grounds from rubbing and scuffing during transit.
- Group by gauge and cut length, then label each box with counts and SKUs (e.g., 4 AWG x 8 ft). Include packing lists inside for easy job-site kitting.
- Palletize multiple boxes with no overhang, then stretch-wrap and strap. Mark NMFC 160180, Class 70, piece count, and delivery PO on the outer label.
- Deter theft by avoiding the word “copper” on exterior labels; use internal codes and opaque wrap. Request secure terminal handling when quoting.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 70 means no density math, lowering reclass and inspection risk for predictable LTL charges.
- Boxed packaging stacks well in trailers, improving cube use and cutting damage-related claims on dense copper items.
- Non-hazardous status broadens carrier acceptance and avoids hazmat surcharges, simplifying paperwork and scheduling.
- Clear NMFC mapping accelerates quoting and TMS automation, improving bid accuracy and freight rate consistency across lanes.
