Notes
Note 160192: NOTE-Applies only on terminal housings in the shape of pedestals or posts used where telephone wire or electric cable emerges from underground.
How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Verify the build matches NMFC note: pedestal or post terminal housings made of 16 gauge or thicker steel for underground telecom/electric lines; lighter gauge or non‑steel units classify elsewhere.
- Palletize upright with blocking through the base, then strap firmly. Cap conduit knockouts, pad sharp edges, and box loose doors or hardware; example: 2–3 housings per 48x40 pallet under 60 in high.
- Describe clearly on the BOL: “Steel pedestal terminal housings – underground utility, NMFC 160190, Class 60, non‑haz.” Include piece count and handling notes even though density isn’t required.
- Mark center of gravity and no-fork zones. Use corner protectors and avoid stacking on door faces; request liftgate or long forks when shipping tall post‑type units.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Predictable costs with a fixed Class 60 rating—reduces reclass fees and keeps LTL quotes consistent.
- Steel construction tolerates LTL handling, minimizing the need for heavy crating while still protecting finish and edges—lower packing spend.
- Non‑hazardous commodity status streamlines paperwork and speeds tendering across utility and contractor lanes.
- Accurate NMFC coding (160190) improves carrier acceptance and shortens dock time on large build‑out projects for telecom and power crews.
