Notes

Note 160421: NOTE-Articles tendered for shipment on lift truck skids, pallets or platforms must be securely fastened to and must not overhang the edges of the lift truck skid, pallet or platform deck. Exposed surfaces and edges must be protected by packing forms or other packaging materials so as to withstand the normal rigors of the less-than-truckload environment.

How to Determine Your Class

To find the correct freight class for your shipment:

  1. Verify the shipment qualifies as “in packages” (see Note, item 160421). Use strong fiber tubes or double-wall cartons with end caps, then stretch-wrap and strap to a pallet when needed.
  2. Pack components by type: bundle pole sections together and box bases/holders separately. Pad metal parts to prevent punctures and keep heavy bases low and braced on the pallet.
  3. Calculate density with packaged dimensions. Example: 96 × 6 × 6 in at 28 lb = 2.0 cu ft and 14 lb/cu ft; use this to select the proper class within 70–400.
  4. Manage length and handling. Use sectional or telescoping poles to avoid overlength surcharges, apply edge protection, label as long freight, and confirm carrier length triggers (often 8–12 ft).

Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.

Business Value

  • Accurate density drives the correct freight class, reducing reclass bills and stabilizing LTL rates for pole and base shipments.
  • Sectional packaging cuts overlength fees and opens up more carrier options, improving transit choices and bid competitiveness.
  • Damage prevention through end caps, separation of bases, and bracing lowers claim risk and protects delivery timelines.
  • Clear NMFC mapping speeds quotes and tenders, streamlines TMS setups, and minimizes accessorial disputes for recurring shipments.
