Notes
Note 160712: NOTE-Also applies on necessary equipment of carrier case repair kit and hand pump when included in package with pontoon.
How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Use NMFC 160710 at Class 100 on quotes and the BOL; describe as “Pontoons, rubberized fabric, deflated, in boxes,” and reference Note item 160712 if the carrier requests it.
- Roll the pontoon skins loosely to avoid crease or seam damage, cap inflation valves, bag against moisture, then place in double‑wall cartons with edge protection and a desiccant pack.
- For multi-box moves, palletize with no overhang, strap and stretch-wrap to prevent bulging, and apply “Do Not Crush” if cartons are not stack-rated.
- Class isn’t density-based here, but record each box’s exact weight and outside dimensions for accurate LTL pricing and capacity planning, especially on volume or guaranteed services.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Predictable costing from a fixed Class 100 rating, enabling cleaner carrier comparisons for marina builds, temporary bridge projects, or emergency deployments.
- Deflated, boxed format reduces punctures and seam failures, lowering OS&D risk and downstream replacement costs.
- Streamlined tendering and fewer reclass disputes; citing the NMFC note (item 160712) helps prevent audit friction and post-shipment billing adjustments.
- Non-hazardous status broadens carrier availability and avoids hazmat fees, improving network reach and transit reliability.
