How to Determine Your Class

To find the correct freight class for your shipment:

  1. Verify the freight matches NMFC 161120 (Posts, Bumping) and note material and finish on the BOL, such as steel, galvanized, painted, or timber.
  2. For long lengths, band posts tightly in bundles on sturdy dunnage; for shorter pieces, palletize or crate. Use edge protectors and cap the ends to prevent puncture.
  3. Mark each bundle’s weight and length clearly. Keep all overhang within the pallet footprint and leave forklift clearance for safe handling.
  4. Chock or block round posts to stop rolling, add anti-slip between layers, and stretch-wrap to contain base plates, caps, or hardware.

Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.

Business Value

  • Fixed Class 50 helps secure lower LTL rates for dense, durable posts.
  • Single, non-density classification reduces reclass disputes and billing surprises.
  • Bundled or palletized packaging speeds dock turns and cuts handling fees.
  • Non-hazardous status broadens carrier options and simplifies documentation.
