Notes
Note 160891: NOTE-Applies only on United States Postal Service mail collection boxes intended to be installed on the curb of streets, street intersections, lobbies or vestibules of buildings and other urban and suburban locations for the depositing of letters and small package mail by postal patrons.
How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Match the item to this listing: mail collection boxes (see Note item 160891), call/lock boxes, cabinets or pigeon hole cases, dividers, partitions, postal bag racks, distributing/routing/stamping tables, and letter trays.
- Use approved packaging: boxes or crates; for call/lock boxes, comply with NMFC Package 1179. Secure doors, drawers, and locks, remove loose hardware, bag keys, and block/bracer inside the container.
- Calculate density for class: record dimensions and weight per handling unit, compute cubic feet, then weight ÷ cubic feet to get pcf. Example: a 180 lb pigeon-hole cabinet on 20 cu ft = 9 pcf (mid-range class under density scale).
- Palletize to prevent sway: strap and corner-protect cabinets, keep no overhang, stack trays and dividers tightly to raise density, mark This Side Up for tables, and list NMFC 160890 and Non-hazardous on the BOL.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Lower costs by boosting density: nest trays/dividers and choose right crate size to raise pcf, often moving from higher classes toward mid-range for 10–30% savings on LTL rates.
- Avoid reclass/reweigh fees: packaging to Package 1179 (where applicable) and clear item naming reduce inspection delays and costly adjustments.
- Cut damage and claims: braced crates and protected edges keep locks, hinges, and sorting slots intact, preventing expensive replacement of specialized postal fixtures.
- Faster tendering and more capacity: non-hazmat status and standard packaging broaden carrier options, improving pickup availability and transit reliability.
